Hogrefe has made a commitment to sustainability and to doing our utmost to help our planet and our fellow citizens. We have created a mission statement, pledged to uphold standards, and have begun a specific series of actions to achieve these important goals.
At the Hogrefe Group we are aware of our responsibilities for a more sustainable world and want to make the best contribution possible. We are aligning our corporate activities to support this goal. Sustainability covers a wide range of essential topics – from using clean energy, battling climate change, and conducting responsible consumption and production – to reducing inequality, improving well-being, supporting education, promoting gender equality, and boosting innovation.
We have formalized our commitment, having signed the SDG Publishers Compact to actively support and accelerate the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the UN by 2030. We have anchored sustainability as a fixed component of our future strategy, and will remain open and engaged so we continue to move forward.
As SDG Publishers Compact member, we strive to develop sustainable practices and act as champions of the SDGs by publishing books and journals that help inform, advance, and inspire action on the issues of the SDGs. Thereby, especially Goal 3 and Goal 13 are in our focus.
In the summer of 2022, all Hogrefe locations were asked for the most diverse key figures and emissions consumptions per year to see where we already stand and where our starting point for more sustainable and climate-friendly action lies. Together we evaluate measures that can be implemented to reduce emissions. All our sites are already dealing with the topic of sustainability under the local parameters.
As a publisher of psychology, psychotherapy, and psychiatry, as well as nursing, public health, and medicine, SDG goal "Good Health and Well-Being," forms the core theme of the research we publish. In addition, psychology is fundamental to achieving each goal, as it explores how we can change the behavior and expectations of individuals and societies to achieve sustainable development for all. Through the research we publish, we aim to contribute to solutions to the challenges posed by the SDGs.
This journal explicitly asks authors of all papers to include “public significance statements” that “identify why the article’s findings are important to helping to meet one or more of the 2016–2030 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”. (Stuart C. Carr and Ines Meyer in their Editorial “Seeing Ahead From the Shoulders of Others” International Perspectives in Psychology (2017), 6, pp. 1-4, https://doi.org/10.1037/ipp0000067). It was an initiative taken when the journal was being published by the APA, but it has continued since we took the journal over.
